Saint Joseph: A Man For Our Times

During this year’s Summit, you will have the opportunity to get to know St Joseph from a Carmelite perspective and you will start to see St. Joseph in a new light. St Teresa teaches that we should turn to St Joseph for any need and that he never let her down.

“I took for my patron and Lord the glorious St. Joseph …. I cannot call to mind that I have ever asked him at any time for anything he has not granted. I am filled with amazement when I consider the great favours God has given me through this blessed saint.”
St Teresa of Avila

Introduction

Keynote Speakers

Saint Joseph as a Model of Courage and a Beacon of Hope
Rev. Joseph F. Chorpenning, O.S.F.S., S.T.L., Ph.D.

Context matters. It facilitates situating the present within the broader span of history. It also enriches and deepens understanding and appreciation of it. This is especially true when it comes to reflecting on Saint Joseph. In this talk, I will consider how Saint Joseph was/is perceived as a model of courage and a beacon of hope at three key moments in Christian history. First, the present moment, which is that of the global pandemic, Pope Francis, and his apostolic letter on Saint Joseph. Then widening the context, two earlier moments: early modern Catholicism when, building on insights that first surfaced during the Middle Ages, Teresa of Ávila and Francis de Sales—each in their own way–appeal to Saint Joseph to revitalise and reinvigorate Christian life; and the 19th century when Blessed Pope Pius IX and Pope Leo XIII turn to St. Joseph in addressing the state of the Church and society in the wake of the French Revolution and then the Industrial Revolution. By way of conclusion, I will suggest how the time-honoured tradition of seeing Saint Joseph as a model of courage and a beacon of hope can help us to respond to the invitation that, Pope Francis stipulates, the Year of Saint Joseph places before us: to increase our knowledge and love of this great saint, to encourage us to implore his intercession, and to imitate his virtues.

Saint Joseph, Trusted by God and a Beacon of Hope
Rev. Sr. Mary of Saint Joseph, OCD

This Year of St Joseph encourages us to reflect more deeply on the silent man of the Gospel, whose story lights a beacon of hope for all of us in life’s varied circumstances. Which of us has not sometimes, like St Joseph, had to take a brave step in faith without seeing clearly where life was leading us. All who have to work hard to support a family, all who face danger, insecurity, exile, all who know the challenges and responsibilities, as well as the joys and rewards of parenting, can look to St Joseph as to a beacon of hope, lighting the way ahead. God placed so much trust in St Joseph. That is a powerful encouragement for us to trust him too.
