You have kept the forms. You have followed the procedures, faithfully, year after year. This day is not one more layer on top of that. It is the foundation underneath it — the piece that makes everything else finally hold.

Every form you’ve completed. Every training you’ve sat through. Every concern you’ve reported, carefully and on time. None of it was wasted, and none of it goes unnoticed.
But research into safeguarding culture keeps arriving at the same uncomfortable finding: compliance alone does not reliably keep people safe. Procedure protects only when something deeper holds it up.
This day doesn’t ask you to do more. It asks you to see differently — to root everything you already do so well in a specifically Carmelite way of beholding the person in front of you, so that your faithfulness finally stands on ground that can bear its weight.
You don’t need to belong to a religious community to need this. Whether you carry out safeguarding as a priest, a lay leader, a spiritual director, or a professional in any setting, the question is the same: what actually keeps someone safe, once the form is filled in?

Biblical scholar and Director of CACS, Fr Alex has spent years grounding safeguarding practice in Carmelite theological anthropology rather than compliance language alone.
