The Daughters of St Teresa Series

Recipient of Mercy – Daughter: Mary of the Angels

Sunday 17th July, 4pm-6pm UK time, London

Speaker: Dr Cyprian Blamires

Over four hundred years of her canonization, St Teresa’s spiritual legacy lives on and it has been lived and expressed by her sons and daughters.

It is in this light that the Centre for Applied Carmelite Spirituality (CACS) announces a new spirituality series — THE DAUGHTERS OF ST TERESA —featuring four exceptional Carmelites – Mary Maravillas of Jesus, Mary of Jesus Crucified, Mary of the Angels and Mary of St Joseph– whose life manifest a particular legacy of St Teresa.

This series will explore their particular gift in the context of their time as well as a Teresian trait in their spiritual experience.

Talk Details:

In this online talk, we will be introduced to the life, mission and spirituality of Blessed Mary of the Angels (Marianna Fontanella), a member of an Italian aristocratic family, entered the Discalced Carmelite Convent of St Christina in Turin in 1676 at the age of fifteen years and three months.  She became widely known for her exceptional spirit of humility and obedience, for her frequent ecstasies, and for the quality of her spiritual insights.  She was first elected prioress at the exceptionally young age of 33, and there had to be a papal dispensation for that because of her youth.  She was often asked for her guidance and her prayers by members of the social elite, including royalty.   She founded the monastery of St Joseph of the Mother of God in Moncalieri in 1703.  She died in 1717.  Although her fame was widespread in France and Italy up to the nineteenth century – she was beatified by Pope Pius IX in 1865 – her name has fallen into relative obscurity in more recent times.
